CHAPTER 3: The Groom at the End of the Aisle

Lucas had imagined the aisle a thousand times.
He had imagined Sarah rolling toward him under roses while guests stood, not because tradition demanded it, but because she deserved the room's full attention. He had imagined taking her hand and making a vow that did not pity her body or romanticize her pain. He had imagined beginning a marriage with the truth that love after trauma was still love, not charity.
He had not imagined finding her soaked in champagne while his mother stood over her like a queen addressing a prisoner.
The envelope in Simone's hand changed the air.
Virginia reached for it. Lucas stepped between them.
"No," he said.
The single word seemed to offend his mother more than any shouting could have.
Simone handed the envelope to Sarah, not to Lucas. That mattered. Sarah looked at the paper, at the room, then at the man she had been moments away from marrying.
"Did you know?" she asked.
Lucas flinched. "Know what?"
"That the first ambulance log disappeared. That the driver told police I stepped in front of the car. That the north gate cameras went dark for sixteen minutes. Did you know any of it before today?"
"No."
Virginia scoffed. "Do not perform innocence. You were told she was emotionally unstable after the accident. You were told not to feed the fantasy that she could still be part of this family."
Lucas looked at his mother as if seeing a stranger wearing a familiar face. "You told me she needed rest. You told me the doctors asked for fewer visits."
"They did."
Simone's expression hardened. "No doctor asked that. I was there every day. You blocked his name at the nurses' desk. You told staff the fiance was overwhelmed and Sarah was not to be disturbed unless you approved it."
Sarah closed her eyes.
For weeks after surgery, she had believed Lucas stayed away because the reality of the chair had frightened him. When he returned, exhausted and desperate, both of them had apologized for pain they did not understand someone else had organized.
Lucas turned toward the guests.
"The wedding is paused," he said.
Virginia smiled in victory.
Then he took Sarah's wet hand and held it where everyone could see.
"Not ended," he continued. "Paused because no woman should have to marry while evidence of a crime is being hidden by the family she is entering."
From the back row, an older man in a black suit stood suddenly.
Sarah recognized him from the accident report.
He was the driver who said she walked into the road.
