CHAPTER 10: Under the Dawn

They arrived at the hospital while the city was still dark. Noah ran ahead, Daniel followed, his palm still remembering the small feeling of his son's shoulder at the gala night. Emily lay in the white light, weaker than usual, but when Noah entered, her eyes were open.

"Mom," Noah whispered.

"Come here."

He climbed to the edge of the bed, carefully avoiding the IV tube. Emily touched his hair. "You did well."

"I found Dad. But you have to stay."

Emily looked at Daniel. Not reproachful, just reassuring. Daniel took her hand.

"I promise," he said. "I won't make Noah the heir before letting him be a child. I will learn, even if it's late."

Emily closed her eyes. "Don't let him be strong alone."

Noah burst into tears, the small sobs that had been held back for so long finally finding their way out. Daniel sat beside his son, placing his hand on his back. This time Noah didn't flinch.

Emily was out of danger by dawn. The road to recovery was long, but she had time. For Daniel, that was enough to change the world.

A week later, Daniel held a press conference. He simply stated that Noah Carter was his son, that Emily Carter had never cheated, and that the Cross family owed them a public apology.
Months later, they returned to the rooftop restaurant. No gala, no guests, no whispers. Just a small table by the railing, a chocolate cake, Emily in a thin sweater, Noah sitting between them.

Daniel asked Noah what he wished for.

Noah said, “I wish next time I don’t have to go find you at a party myself.”
Daniel looked at his son. “I’ll come pick you up myself.”
The night was breezy. This time, Noah wasn’t standing on the edge of the light. He had a chair, a slice of cake, a recovering mother, and a father learning to stay.
