The Girl Beside the Open Grave

The funeral was almost over when the little girl stepped out from between the black umbrellas.
Rain slid off the canopy and tapped against the polished coffin. White roses trembled on the lid. Everyone in the Whitmore family stood in perfect silence because that was what old money did with grief. It made it expensive and quiet.
Lydia Whitmore kept both hands folded at her waist, watching the men lower their eyes instead of their guilt.
Her son Daniel was inside the coffin.
Thirty-eight years old. Brilliant. Healthy, according to every doctor until three weeks ago. Gone before dawn while his wife Mara screamed for the housekeeper and told everyone it had been his heart.
Then the child in the white dress appeared beside the grave.
She was too young to understand a room full of lawyers, but old enough to understand fear. Her hair clung to her cheeks. One hand held a folded piece of paper. The other held a tiny glass vial with a silver cap.
Mara saw it first.
Her black veil lifted in the wind, and for one second her face forgot how to mourn.
At the edge of the crowd, cameras lowered. No one wanted to be seen recording a child who looked too frightened to be acting.
The girl looked at Lydia and whispered, "He told me to bring this if they buried him."
