CHAPTER 1: The Boy at the Doors

Ethan had never been inside a room that expensive.

He was nine years old, white, with messy brown hair, a worn brown jacket, beige shirt, scuffed pants, and small dirt marks near one sleeve. He stood just beyond the double ballroom doors for one breath, staring at the chandeliers, the flowers, the guests, and the clear center aisle that led straight toward Clara.

His right hand closed tightly around the tiny silver hummingbird charm.

He had carried it for three days.

First in his jacket pocket. Then in his fist. Then, when fear made him sweat, inside the cuff of his sleeve so no one would see it before Clara did. His grandmother had told him not to come. She said rich people did not forgive children who brought bad news into their beautiful rooms.

But his grandfather had died with one sentence left unfinished.

Give it back to the girl.

So Ethan came.

He stepped through the threshold naturally, one foot and then the other, entering only through the visible double doors. Guests turned in silence. A security man near the back stiffened, but Ethan had already begun walking down the aisle.

His voice shook, but it carried.

“Clara needs to see this.”

Richard’s smile stayed in place for the guests.
