CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL THEY WANTED TO HUMILIATE

The entire restaurant was waiting for Anna to fall apart.

Not quietly. Not politely. They wanted to watch it happen beneath the chandeliers, between crystal glasses and polished silverware, while a poor kitchen girl learned exactly where rich people believed she belonged.

Anna stood in the middle of the dining room with the smell of smoke, roasted meat, and kitchen heat still clinging to her uniform. Her tray trembled in her hands. Her apron was stained. Her hair was tied back in a plain knot. Her fingers were rough from years of chopping vegetables, scrubbing pans, lifting crates, and burning herself over fires no guest ever cared to see.

In Mark Delaney’s restaurant, people like Anna were meant to stay invisible.

They cooked the meals, washed the plates, carried the trays, cleaned the floors, and disappeared before the wealthy guests had to notice them.

But that evening, Mark had dragged Anna into the light.

He stood beside the grand piano in the center of the private dining room, smiling as if he had already won a game he had invented.

“If you can play that piano,” Mark announced loudly, making sure all forty guests heard him, “I’ll give you this restaurant.”

A wave of shocked laughter moved through the room.

Mark lifted one finger.

“But if you can’t, I’ll throw you out tonight without paying you a single cent.”

Anna’s face turned pale.

Only one minute earlier, she had been crossing the dining room with a silver platter of roasted meat. She had passed near the grand piano and heard a waiter press one awkward key.

Without thinking, she had whispered, “The piano isn’t tuned.”

That was all.

But Mark heard her.

Now every rich guest had turned to look at her as if she were entertainment.

Anna lowered her eyes, wishing she could run back into the heat and smoke of the kitchen.

But Mark would not let her leave.
