CHAPTER 7: EMMA’S TRUTH

Emma looked at Anna for a long moment.

Something changed in her face.

The amusement was gone. The superiority was gone. In its place was shame.

She stepped forward.

“Anna,” she said quietly, “I’m sorry.”

Mark snapped his head toward her. “Emma.”

But she did not stop.

“I knew the piano was off,” Emma admitted. “I told Dad last week it needed tuning, but he didn’t want to pay for it before the event.”

A few guests whispered.

Mark’s face flushed red.

Emma’s voice trembled, but she continued.

“And I knew you were right when you said it. I should have spoken up.”

Anna said nothing.

Emma looked down at her bracelet, then back at Anna.

“I have had every teacher, every piano, every chance. And tonight, you played with more truth than I ever have.”

Mark grabbed her arm. “Enough.”

Emma pulled away.

“No, Dad. You embarrassed her because you thought she was beneath us. But she wasn’t. She never was.”

The words struck harder than shouting.

Mark looked around, desperate for support, but found none.

Samuel stepped beside Anna.

“This young woman does not need your restaurant as charity,” he said. “She needs what she has already earned: respect, wages, and the truth honored in front of everyone you tried to entertain with her pain.”

One of Mark’s investors stood.

“I think we should discuss our partnership tomorrow,” he said coldly. “Or perhaps not at all.”

Another guest placed his napkin on the table and rose.

The room that had once laughed with Mark now turned away from him.

His empire of applause was collapsing.
