CHAPTER 2: EMMA’S PERFORMANCE

Emma sat at the piano first.

She did not look nervous. Why would she? The room adored her before she even touched the keys.

Her fingers hovered over the piano with trained elegance. She glanced at Anna once, not with hatred, but with something worse—amusement.

Then she began to play.

The music rushed through the dining room like sparkling water. Fast, polished, dramatic. Her hands moved beautifully. Her posture was perfect. Her dress shimmered every time she leaned into the melody.

The guests were impressed immediately.

Mark stood behind her with pride glowing across his face. Every note seemed to feed his ego. Every admiring whisper made him stand taller.

Anna watched quietly.

There was no doubt Emma had skill. She had practiced for years. She had the confidence of someone who had always been given rooms, teachers, instruments, and time.

But Anna heard what the others did not.

She heard the weak middle keys. She heard the slight sharpness in the upper register. She heard Emma pushing speed where emotion should have lived. She heard performance, but not pain.

When Emma struck the final chord, applause exploded across the dining room.

People stood. Glasses lifted. Someone shouted, “Bravo!”

Emma rose from the bench and bowed with a soft smile.

Mark clapped louder than anyone.

Then he turned slowly toward Anna.

“Your turn.”

Anna’s fingers tightened around the edge of her tray.

Her legs felt numb.

The applause faded into an eager silence. It was not the silence before art. It was the silence before punishment.

Anna slowly placed the tray on an empty table. A drop of sauce slid across the silver edge. She wiped her trembling hands on her stained apron.

One step.

Then another.

The walk to the piano felt endless.

Emma stood beside it, smiling.

Mark leaned back, waiting for the moment Anna would break.
