CHAPTER 1: The Slap Beneath the Chandelier
The Hayes mansion had been quiet in the way only old money could be quiet. The chandelier glowed over dark wood panels, polished marble, and portraits of people who had never needed to explain themselves.
Maria stood near the center of the living room with Grace pressed against her apron, one small hand twisting the fabric as if it were the only safe thing in the house.
Eleanor Hayes stepped closer. Her teal satin dress moved softly, but her face was rigid. Before anyone could stop her, her hand crossed Maria's cheek with one sharp slap.
Grace screamed.
Maria turned from the impact, stunned, but her first movement was not toward her own face. She pulled Grace behind her hip and held the child with both arms.
"How dare you steal from my family?" Eleanor said.
Ryan stood near the leather chairs, his gray sweater neat, his expression carefully blank. Mr. Hayes, the old butler, watched from beside the doorway without moving.
Maria swallowed the pain. Her cheek burned, but she kept her voice low.
"I didn't take anything."
The baby monitor on the wooden side table glowed faintly in the corner of the room.
Its tiny screen had been left angled toward the sofa, forgotten after Grace's afternoon nap, and the black glass reflected the chandelier like a second, smaller room. No one had cared about it a minute earlier.
In the Hayes mansion, machines were trusted more than servants, but only when they said what the family wanted to hear.
