CHAPTER 1: The Pearls That Framed the Nanny

The pearl necklace had belonged to Eleanor's mother. It was not the most expensive piece in the house, but it was the only one Eleanor touched with clean hands and a softened face.
That morning, the drawer in the upstairs dressing room had been found open, the velvet tray empty.
Ryan had been the first to notice. He had called Eleanor with the kind of concern that sounded useful. Then he had mentioned Maria. Maria had access to every room. Maria had been upstairs.
Maria came from a small apartment across town. By evening, the accusation had become a decision.
Maria had tried to explain. She had taken Grace to the nursery, made tea for Eleanor, folded blankets in the upstairs hall. She had not gone near the jewelry drawer.
She even knew which floorboards creaked outside the dressing room and avoided them because Eleanor hated unexpected sounds near that part of the house.
But explanations from employees often died before they reached the powerful. In houses like this, suspicion did not need evidence when it already had a uniform to attach itself to.
Grace cried harder. "Bella didn't do it," she kept saying, using the old nickname she had given Maria when she was little.
Eleanor looked at her daughter with pain and impatience. "Grace, sweetheart, you don't understand."
Maria held the child tighter. "She understands more than you think."
Ryan's mouth tightened for a second. Only Mr. Hayes seemed to notice.
