CHAPTER 12: Mile Marker Seventeen

The sheriff arrived without sirens.
A deputy stepped from the cruiser, taking in the scene with one long look: the old man in the road, the sedan, the convoy, the suitcase open on the hood like a testimony nobody had sworn to yet.
Preston began speaking before anyone asked him a question.
Elias listened to the lies arrange themselves. Confusion. Family concern. Misunderstanding. Medical safety. Each word sounded smaller in the desert than it had in marble conference rooms.
Caleb handed the letter and the thumb drive to counsel, who had arrived in the second truck wearing denim under a blazer.
The deputy asked Elias one question.
“Sir, do you know where you are?”
Elias looked at the mile marker. “Seventeen. Where my brother broke an axle in 1974 and I hauled him out before sunrise.”
