CHAPTER 15: What the Ocean Refused to Keep

Maren took Leo home in the late morning, not to the Cross estate, but to the cedar house Declan had bought before the family decided modesty was bad for appearances.
The house smelled of rain, old books, and the pancakes their housekeeper insisted on making even though no one was hungry. Leo fell asleep on the couch still holding Maren’s hand, his small sneakers drying by the fireplace like evidence of a boy who had survived a night designed for adults to explain away.
Nora called twice. Detectives called once. Reporters waited beyond the gate until Maren’s security director moved them politely down the road.
Maren answered only the call from the board chair.
“Mrs. Cross,” he said carefully, “we need to know how you intend to proceed.”
Maren looked at Leo sleeping beneath a quilt Declan’s mother had never approved of because it was handmade and not imported.
“With my son protected,” she said. “With every disabled camera audited. With every clause they tried to hide read aloud in the proper room.”
There was a pause.
“And the Asteria?”
Maren watched sunlight touch the wet bracelet on the table.
“Sell it,” she said. “Use the money for crew safety and children’s rescue training.”
That evening, Leo woke and asked if the ocean was angry.
Maren held him close.
“No,” she said. “The ocean gave us back.”
