CHAPTER 9: Asteria Returns Without Applause

The yacht returned to harbor under escort.
No music played now. The string quartet had packed their instruments before being told. Guests stood in clusters, wet with mist and guilt, rehearsing sentences that would make them sound concerned without admitting they had watched too long.
Vivienne descended the gangway in a black shawl, diamonds hidden now against her collarbone.
Gideon followed with his attorney at one shoulder and his captain at the other. He looked older on land. The velvet tuxedo that had seemed theatrical above the rail now looked like a costume no court would respect.
Maren sat inside the patrol station with Leo sleeping against her lap.
A medic had checked his lungs twice. She had refused the hospital until a pediatrician she trusted arrived. Survival made her stubborn. Motherhood made her immovable.
Through the glass, she watched Vivienne speak to an officer with one hand pressed to her heart.
The performance was good.
It had always been good.
Then the officer showed her a still image pulled from the bracelet feed.
Vivienne stopped speaking.
Maren could not hear the silence through the glass, but she recognized it instantly.
It was the sound of money discovering it had been recorded.
