CHAPTER 1: THE SMILE THAT CRACKED

THE NIGHT EVERY EXIT WAS LOCKED
Ethan took one slow step toward her.
Not close enough to touch.
Just close enough to warn.
"You're making a mistake," he said.
His voice was soft, almost kind, the same voice he used with donors, reporters, and older women who liked handsome men with clean hands. But Isabelle knew the difference now. Kindness was not what lived behind his teeth.
She lowered the phone slightly but did not end the call.
The bruised cheek pulled when she breathed.
Ethan glanced around the ballroom. Too many eyes. Too many witnesses. He had expected tears. He had expected her to run upstairs, fix her makeup, and protect the family name the way women in rooms like this were trained to do.
He had not expected her to stand in the light.
A guest near the front column whispered nothing, then stopped himself. No one wanted to be the first person to admit they were watching a powerful man come apart.
Ethan lifted his hands, palms open beside his tuxedo.
"Isabelle," he said, trying to make her name sound like a private argument. "Let's not turn this into something ugly."
She looked at him for a long second.
"You already did."
His jaw tightened.
Behind him, several guests turned toward the main double doors.
