CHAPTER 4: THE BRUISE UNDER CHANDELIERS

After the slap, Ethan had stared at his own hand.
Not in horror.
In calculation.
He had looked at her cheek, then toward the ballroom music beyond the corridor, and in that tiny pause Isabelle understood him completely. He was not sorry he had hurt her. He was deciding whether anyone would believe her.
"You fell," he said.
Isabelle wiped her lip with the back of her fingers.
He smiled then, soft and poisonous.
"No one knows who you are here. Remember that."
That was his mistake.
She walked past him before he could block her again. Her heels clicked through the service hallway, then across the marble floor where the chandeliers made everything beautiful enough to hide rot.
She did not scream.
She did not cry.
She called her father.
Now, in the ballroom, Ethan tried to look wounded by the accusation he had not yet heard aloud.
"Mr. Vale," he said carefully, "your daughter is upset. There has been a misunderstanding."
Richard did not answer him.
He was still looking at Isabelle.
For all his money, all his control, he had missed the exact years when she had learned to bleed quietly.
That failure crossed his face once, then hardened into something colder.
