CHAPTER 2: A Name the Bank Tried to Forget

Daniel Reed had once worked in that building.
Not in the lobby, where marble and glass made money feel clean. He had worked downstairs, in the audit department, in a windowless office full of quiet people who noticed when numbers pretended to be innocent.
Ms. Carter knew him before she became manager.
Daniel was the kind of man who double-checked everything and apologized before proving someone wrong. He kept a picture of Noah taped inside his desk drawer. He drank bad coffee. He never missed pickup from school until the week he disappeared.
Three months earlier, Daniel had stopped coming to work.
The official explanation was resignation.
The rumor was theft.
The silence was louder than both.
Ms. Carter had asked questions at first. Too many, according to regional leadership. Then her access changed. Files vanished. Calls were not returned.
People stopped saying Daniel’s name in meetings, which told her more than the meetings ever had.
A bank can bury a scandal under policy, procedure, and polite emails. It cannot bury the face of a son who walks through the front door carrying his father’s unfinished truth.
Now Daniel’s son stood in front of her with a black duffel bag and eyes that looked like they had not trusted sleep in days.
“Where is your father?” she asked, though dread already knew the answer before the boy spoke.
