CHAPTER 8: The Manager Chooses a Side

Ms. Carter returned to the lobby with Noah, Officer Brooks, the duffel, and the small metal box.
The crowd had thinned, but enough people remained to witness what happened next.
Her phone had already started lighting up with calls from upstairs.
Regional office.
Compliance.
A number she recognized and did not answer.
She placed the closed duffel back on the polished counter.
Then she looked at Officer Brooks.
“Call federal authorities from your personal phone,” she said. “Not the bank line.”
Officer Brooks nodded once.
Noah stared at her. “Are you going to say my dad stole it?”
The question was small and devastating.
Ms. Carter knelt in front of him despite the customers watching.
“No,” she said. “I’m going to say your father tried to stop a crime, and someone tried to bury him under it.”
Noah’s eyes filled, but he did not cry.
Some children learn too early that tears can wait until the safe part.
A man in a tailored suit appeared near the elevator bank and froze when he saw Officer Brooks on the phone. Ms. Carter recognized him from regional audits he was never supposed to attend.
He turned to leave.
Officer Brooks quietly stepped between him and the glass doors.
