CHAPTER 1: The Ring in His Palm
The gold wedding ring caught the chandelier light.
It was small in Noah's palm but heavy in the silence that followed. The guests stopped pretending not to stare. A waiter froze with a silver tray near the wall.
Noah held the ring out with both fear and obedience, as if someone had told him this moment mattered more than his own embarrassment.
“My mom said this belonged to my father,” he said.
Margaret's face hardened.
Arthur did not speak at first. He only looked at the ring, then at Noah's face, then back to the ring again.
James shifted behind his mother.
His clenched hand trembled once.
Noah swallowed. “She said if anything happened to her, I had to bring it here.”
Margaret gave a cold little laugh. “How convenient.”
Noah's cheeks reddened, but his hand stayed open.
Arthur pushed his chair back just enough for the wood to scrape softly against the floor.
“Place it on the table,” he said.
Noah obeyed.
The ring landed beside Arthur's plate without a sound, and somehow that made it worse.
