CHAPTER 2: Arthur Recognizes the Gold

Arthur had bought that ring forty-three years ago.
Not for himself. For his eldest son, James, on the day James became engaged to a girl his family approved of and did not love.
The engagement had ended before the wedding. The ring should have been returned to the family safe, recorded by Margaret, sealed away with other heirlooms that mattered more for ownership than feeling.
But Arthur remembered more than the gold.
He remembered the tiny nick near the inside edge, made when James struck it against a stone fountain during a drunken argument in Italy.
He remembered James refusing to explain why he had stopped wearing it.
He remembered Margaret saying the ring had been lost.
Now it sat beside his plate, brought not by a thief, not by a collector, but by a ten-year-old boy with his son's mouth and a stranger's courage.
Arthur looked up.
“Where did you get that ring?”
Noah drew in a small breath.
