At the charity gala, Lena Gray moved between the white-clothed tables with a tray of empty glasses balanced against her hip. The ballroom was all chandeliers, marble, gold chairs, and soft laughter, the sort of place where nobody looked twice at the girl clearing away what they had finished.
On the stage, Thomas Vale stood beneath a wash of warm light. He was the guest of honor, a famous hotel magnate whose foundation had been built in memory of his lost daughter. Everyone knew the story: a child vanished from a seaside fair many years ago, and a father turned grief into charity.
Lena had heard the name before. Everyone had. But she kept her eyes down and did her work.
Then Thomas stopped speaking.
The pause was so sudden that the music seemed to shrink. His gaze had fixed on Lena's wrist, where a thin silver bracelet flashed as she reached for a glass. The bracelet was old, scratched, and too small to slip over her hand, something she had worn since childhood.
