CHAPTER 8: The Girl in the Photograph

The police took Celeste away through the service corridor, not the grand entrance she had used all evening. Reporters shouted her name, but she kept her face lifted, refusing to look ruined.
Lena stayed in the ballroom after everyone left. The chandeliers still shone. Flowers still perfumed the air. Empty glasses still waited on the tables. Only the silence had changed.
Thomas approached slowly.
"I don't know how to be your father tonight," he said. "I only know that I am."
Lena wanted anger to come first. It would have been easier than grief. But when she looked at the old photograph again, she saw a child who had laughed under the sun before the world renamed her.
"My name is Lena," she said.
Thomas nodded. "Then Lena is the name I will learn. Elise is the name I will mourn with you, if you let me."
He did not ask her to move into his house. He did not offer money as a cure. He simply asked if she would allow him to call the next morning. That restraint meant more to her than any mansion key could have. It told her he understood that finding her was not the same as owning her life.
That was the sentence that broke her. Not the DNA test, not the photograph, not the bracelet. The permission to be both girls at once.
She let him hold her, awkwardly at first, then tightly enough to feel his heart shaking
