CHAPTER 7: The Charity Built on a Grave

The scandal, when it emerged, was uglier than anyone expected. Years before marrying Thomas, Celeste had been an executive at the Vale Foundation. Thomas's first wife, Mara, had left him after discovering financial fraud inside the charity. Their daughter vanished weeks later.
The official story blamed a random abduction near the pier. But Ruth Gray had worked as a cleaner at the foundation offices. She had taken the child and hidden her, not for ransom, but because Celeste paid her and threatened to destroy her family if she refused.
"Why?" Thomas asked Celeste, his voice barely more than air.
Celeste looked at Lena as if she were still an inconvenience in a stained apron.
"Because a dead child made him untouchable," she said. "A grieving father can raise more money than a divorced man accused of corruption."
The words landed like glass in the room.
Lena gripped the bracelet so hard it hurt. She had imagined abandonment, poverty, bad luck. She had not imagined becoming the centerpiece of a lie large enough to decorate ballrooms.
Thomas whispered, "You used my daughter as a monument."
Celeste replied, "And you became famous because of it."
