CHAPTER 8: Chapter 9 - The Man in the Mirror

Days later, Leon's lawyer released a statement calling the videos manipulated and Isabella a fortune hunter. It might have worked if the final file had not been found in the tablet's deleted folder.
Maya had named it Monster House.
The video showed the foyer mirror at night. Leon stood before it speaking on the phone, unaware the tablet was recording from inside the toy basket.
"The child is too young to testify," he said. "The nanny is the problem. Once she is gone, Maya will forget. Children forget everything."
He paused, listening.
"No, Olivia didn't fall because she was clumsy. She fell because she thought love made her brave. That was her mistake."
In the interview room, Sophia watched Isabella hear those words without crying. The pain in her face was quieter than tears.
Maya was not shown the video. She did not need to be. The adults had finally learned that a child should not have to prove terror again and again before being believed.
When the court granted temporary custody to Isabella, the judge asked Maya where she felt safe.
Maya reached for Isabella's hand.
"With Bella," she said. "And with the red light off."
