CHAPTER 9: Chapter 10 - The House After Silence
The Vale house was sold before spring. Isabella did not want its marble floors, its chandeliers, or the staircase Maya still refused to pass without holding someone's hand. Olivia's trust was restored. The foundation was audited. Leon's portrait disappeared from the charity hall where he had once smiled down at donors.
Isabella moved with Maya to a smaller home near a park. There were no servants' corridors, no locked archives, no cane tapping across marble after dark. Maya chose yellow curtains. Isabella bought a kitchen table with scratches already in the wood so neither of them would be afraid to live around it.
On the first quiet Sunday, Sophia visited with a box from evidence release. Inside was the cracked purple tablet and the sapphire pendant. Maya looked at both for a long time.
"Do I have to keep them?" she asked.
"Only if you want to," Isabella said.
Maya kept the pendant in a drawer with Olivia's letters. The tablet she placed on the kitchen table, powered it on, and deleted every old video except one.
It was a clip of Olivia laughing as Maya danced badly in socks.
At the end, Olivia leaned close to the camera and whispered, "If the red light is on, it means we're making a memory."
Maya watched it twice. Then she turned the tablet off and climbed into Isabella's arms.
For the first time in years, the silence in the house did not feel like fear.
