CHAPTER 6: Lucas Hale

Lucas's mother, Mara Hale, had been a night nurse. She was the one who noticed Clara's toes moving during sleep. She was the one who copied the original scan before Dr. Voss replaced it. When she threatened to report the change, she was fired, sued, and followed until she stopped sleeping with the lights off.
"She died in a hit-and-run six months later," Lucas said. "Police called it bad luck. She called me the night before and said if anything happened, I should find the girl in the chair." Clara wanted to say she was sorry, but the words felt too small. Lucas did not want pity. He wanted the truth to have somewhere to stand.
That afternoon, a court order sent Clara to an independent rehabilitation center. No cameras were allowed. No foundation staff. No father in a tailored suit explaining what was best. The new doctor tested reflexes, sensation, muscle response. Her face remained professional, but Clara saw the pause after the results. "You have severe weakness from neglect and medication," the doctor said. "But not permanent paralysis. I cannot promise speed. I can promise possibility." Possibility was not a miracle. It was harder. It meant work. It meant pain. It meant hope could hurt her again. Clara nodded anyway.
