CHAPTER 8: Wing C

The official record said Elena died before the ambulance arrived. Mara's photograph said otherwise. Detective Mora reopened the crash file, and within hours a forgotten transfer log surfaced: unidentified female patient moved from Saint Aurelia to Whitmore Recovery Wing C.
Wing C was a private unit funded by Richard's foundation. It had no public directory, no ordinary admissions desk, and a security system more suited to a vault than a hospital ward. Clara insisted on going. She was not strong enough to walk more than a few assisted steps, so she entered in the wheelchair she now understood as both prison and evidence. Lucas walked beside her. Mora led the warrant team through the silent corridor.
At the last room, a nurse began to cry before anyone spoke. Inside, beneath dim medical lights, lay a woman with silver at her temples and a thin scar near her hairline. Her face was older, hollowed by years of sedation, but Clara knew her before anyone said the name. "Mom?" Clara whispered. Elena's eyelids moved. Her fingers, resting on the blanket, curled once toward Clara. Lucas covered his mouth. Detective Mora lowered her head. The final lie had not been that Clara's life was over. It was that her mother had no life left to come back to.
