CHAPTER 1: THE MAN IN THE LEATHER VEST

The lieutenant thought he was escorting an old biker out of the Army canteen.

Lieutenant Ryan Cole was twenty-seven years old, sharp-uniformed, freshly promoted, and determined to prove he belonged in command. Everything about him looked polished that afternoon: the crease in his trousers, the shine on his boots, the straight line of his cap tucked under one arm.

The old man at the corner table was the opposite.

He wore faded jeans, heavy boots, and a weathered black leather vest covered with road dust. His beard was gray, his shoulders were broad but bent with age, and his hands looked like they had survived engines, cold mornings, and old wars. A motorcycle helmet sat on the chair beside him. In front of him was a paper cup of coffee and a small plate of untouched eggs.

Around him, soldiers whispered.

The canteen was usually loud during lunch, full of trays sliding across counters, chairs scraping, and young men laughing too hard at jokes that were not funny. But now the noise had dropped into a low, uneasy murmur.

Ryan noticed the old biker the moment he walked in.

This was an Army post, not a roadside diner. Visitors were allowed only with permission, and Ryan had been warned that senior officers were inspecting the facilities that week. The last thing he wanted was some rough-looking stranger sitting in the middle of the canteen like he owned the place.

He walked toward the table with two military police behind him.

The old man looked up slowly.

“Sir,” Ryan said, keeping his voice firm, “I need to see your visitor pass.”

The old man studied him for a moment. His eyes were pale blue and tired, but not afraid.

“I’m just finishing my coffee,” he said.

“That was not my question.”

The room grew quieter.

Ryan felt every soldier watching. That made him stand even straighter.

“Your pass,” he repeated.
