CHAPTER 1: THE MAN IN THE LEATHER VEST / Chapter 1 / 9 · 61 views

CHAPTER 1: A ROOM FULL OF JUDGMENT

The old man reached into his vest pocket, but his hands moved slowly. Too slowly for Ryan’s patience.

A young private at a nearby table smirked. Another soldier whispered, “Somebody’s about to get tossed.”

Ryan heard it and made no effort to stop the attention. Part of him believed public discipline had value. Rules mattered. Appearance mattered. Order mattered.

The old man finally pulled out a folded paper, creased and stained from travel. Ryan took it, opened it, and frowned.

It was not an official visitor pass.

It was a handwritten note from the chaplain’s office, saying the bearer had permission to visit the post memorial garden and deliver donated supplies to the family assistance center.

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“This is not valid access documentation,” he said.

The old man sighed quietly. “The gate let me through.”

“The gate made a mistake.”

“I brought boxes for the kids’ room,” the old man said. “Winter coats, school bags, some books. The chaplain said I could get lunch before heading out.”

Ryan glanced at the vest again. A patch on the front read Iron Saints Motorcycle Club. Another patch showed an eagle and a faded flag. To Ryan, it looked suspicious, informal, messy.

“This canteen is for authorized personnel,” Ryan said.

The old man’s expression did not change. “I understand.”

“Then you will come with me.”

Some soldiers turned in their seats. A few looked uncomfortable now, but no one spoke.

The old man took one last look at his coffee. Then he pushed his chair back.

He was taller than Ryan expected when he stood, but age had slowed him. His left knee stiffened. He reached for the back of the chair for balance.

One of the MPs moved to help.

Ryan lifted a hand. “He can walk.”

The old man heard him.

So did everyone else.
