CHAPTER 7: THE APOLOGY

When the last box was stacked by the family assistance office, Ryan found Jack near the memorial wall.

The old man was looking at the same faded photograph he had paused beside earlier.

It showed a much younger Jack Malone standing with a group of soldiers in dusty uniforms. His grin was wide then. His shoulders were straight. His eyes had not yet learned to hide so much.

Ryan approached slowly.

“Command Sergeant Major Malone.”

Jack did not turn. “Jack is fine.”

Ryan removed his cap and held it against his chest.

“I owe you an apology.”

“Yes,” Jack said.

The honesty hit harder than anger.

Ryan took a breath. “I judged you by how you looked. I embarrassed you in front of soldiers. I spoke about respect while showing none. I was wrong.”

Jack remained silent.

Ryan continued, voice lower. “My father taught me that discipline begins with appearance. I think I confused appearance with character.”

Jack finally looked at him.

“That happens to young officers.”

Ryan nodded. “It will not happen again.”

Jack studied him for a long moment.

“Do you know what makes a good lieutenant?” he asked.

Ryan hesitated. “Competence. Integrity. Courage.”

“Those help,” Jack said. “But a good lieutenant listens before he commands. He learns the names of the people around him. He does not mistake rank for wisdom. And when he makes a mistake, he owns it before someone has to force him.”

Ryan looked down.

“I’m owning it now.”

Jack nodded once.

“Then start by apologizing to the room, not just to me.”

Ryan’s stomach tightened.

But he knew Jack was right.
