CHAPTER 6: THE BOXES IN THE HALL

Before Ryan could answer, the canteen doors opened again.

Chaplain Daniel Price hurried in, out of breath, carrying a clipboard.

“Mr. Malone,” he called, then stopped when he saw the room. “Oh no.”

Jack gave him a tired smile. “Little misunderstanding, Chaplain.”

The chaplain looked at Ryan. “Lieutenant Cole, Mr. Malone is an invited guest. He and his group brought supplies for the family assistance center.”

Ryan’s face tightened. “I was not informed.”

“They were scheduled through my office.” The chaplain’s voice was calm, but firm. “The boxes are still in the hall because Mr. Malone insisted on carrying half of them himself.”

A few soldiers turned toward the windows. Outside the canteen, near the hallway, they could see stacked boxes labeled children’s coats, winter boots, school supplies, baby blankets, and widow support packets.

Ryan stared at them.

The old biker he had nearly thrown out had arrived with a truck full of help.

Jack looked embarrassed. “Kids need coats. That’s all.”

Sergeant Torres stood again. “Chaplain, permission to assist with unloading?”

The chaplain smiled. “Granted, if the lieutenant approves.”

Every eye turned to Ryan.

For the first time that day, he did not know what command sounded like.

He looked at Jack, then at the boxes, then at the soldiers watching him.

“Yes,” Ryan said quietly. “Permission granted.”

Within seconds, half the canteen moved.

Soldiers carried boxes in lines, passing them hand to hand. Young privates laughed with relief. Sergeants organized piles. The kitchen staff brought extra coffee. The room that had been waiting for a man to be humiliated became a place of work, respect, and purpose.

Jack Malone stood to the side, watching silently.

Ryan stood beside him, feeling the weight of everything he had misunderstood.
