CHAPTER 5: The Blue Paint
Mason swallowed.
The whole room seemed to lean toward him without moving.
Whitney’s stare sharpened, warning him to choose silence.
But Hana stood there with one cheek burning and one torn piece of her future in her hands, and Mason finally understood that staying quiet was not neutral. It had a side.
He pointed, not dramatically, just enough.
“Whitney… that paint is on your fingers.”
Whitney looked down too late.
Blue paint marked her right fingers, the color bright against her pale skin. She tried to close her hand, but the class had already seen it.
Hana slowly lifted the torn sketch page.
The damaged corner showed the same blue paint, still fresh, still glossy in the ripped fibers.
Ms. Carter stepped closer to the table, careful not to touch anything yet.
Her face hardened.
The room did not explode into noise.
It went quieter.
Truth sometimes makes less sound than a lie falling apart.
