CHAPTER 9: The Proof Left Behind

Whitney was sent to the principal’s office with Ms. Carter walking behind her, not angry in any loud way, but final.
Before leaving, Ms. Carter paused beside Hana.
“Your work will still be submitted,” she said. “And so will my report.”
Hana nodded, unable to trust her voice.
The classroom slowly breathed again after the door closed.
Students looked at the desks, at the palette, at the blue paint, at anything except the girl they had nearly allowed to be ruined in front of them.
Mason came closer but stopped at a respectful distance.
“I should have said something sooner,” he said.
Hana looked at him through tired eyes. “But you said it.”
That was not forgiveness for every silence.
It was simply the truth.
She returned to the table and placed the torn pieces of her drawing together. The rip would always show, even after repair. But the picture was still hers.
The blue paint had exposed the lie.
The slap had exposed Whitney.
And Hana, who had been accused in front of everyone, walked out of that classroom with her art, her name, and the proof still drying in the light.
