CHAPTER 12: A House Changes Owners in the Rain

August gave instructions without raising his voice.
The staff were to remain on site for statements. The upstairs study was to be sealed. The trust papers were to be collected. No personal devices would leave Caldwell House until law enforcement cleared them.
Marion tried to object.
'You cannot order people around in my home.'
August looked at the white columns, the balcony, the manicured lawn, and the place where his daughter had landed among the stones.
'Your home was refinanced through a Whitacre guarantee after your son defaulted on the Charleston property,' he said. 'Do not confuse occupancy with ownership.'
The words did not shout. They stripped.
Marion gripped the porch rail.
Dorian heard them too, even while an officer recited procedure beside him. For years, he had performed wealth inside rooms Nora's family kept standing.
