CHAPTER 9: Marion's Polished Lie

Marion had built the Caldwell name from posture, silence, and selective memory.
She told donors that family was sacred. She told employees that loyalty was rewarded. She told Nora, in private, that old families survived by keeping unpleasant women quiet.
On the porch, she tried the same magic again.
'My son would never hurt his wife,' she said, loud enough for every officer to hear. 'Nora has been under severe strain. Her father knows this.'
August turned his head slowly.
'My daughter was under strain because your son attempted to strip her trust before midnight.'
Marion's smile thinned.
One of August's attorneys opened a folder and handed a copy to Maya.
'Emergency injunction,' the attorney said. 'Filed forty minutes ago. No transfer involving Whitacre Trust assets may proceed without court review.'
Dorian stared at the paper.
His mother looked toward Elise as if blaming her for breathing.
