CHAPTER 10: Noah Signs His Name in Crayon

Hannah's surgery was moved to forty-eight hours later.
Grant arranged a new hospital outside Helena's network and placed security at every entrance. Hannah signed forms with a hand that shook only when Noah was not looking. Noah saw anyway.
Children always saw the truth adults tried to lower their voices around.
The night before surgery, they stayed in a protected apartment owned by Grant's attorney. It had no chandeliers, no portraits, no history. Noah loved it immediately because the refrigerator made ice through the door.
"Rich people have robot kitchens," he announced.
Hannah laughed for the first time since the wedding.
Grant carried that sound carefully for the rest of the night.
After dinner, the attorney placed temporary guardianship documents on the table. If Hannah could not make medical decisions, Grant would act for Noah, but only with oversight from a child advocate. Hannah had demanded that clause. Grant had agreed before the attorney finished reading.
Noah watched the adults sign.
"Do I sign too?" he asked.
The attorney smiled gently. "Not this one."
Noah frowned, went to his backpack, and returned with a red crayon. On a blank page, he wrote NOAH REED in uneven letters, then added beneath it: I PICK MOM FIRST AND DAD SECOND IF MOM IS SLEEPING.
Hannah pressed both hands to her mouth.
Grant turned away because tears from him still felt like theft.
But Noah tugged his sleeve. "You have to sign that you won't be late."
Grant sat and wrote beneath the crayon sentence: I WILL BE THERE.
Noah inspected it like a judge.
At dawn, the hospital called.
The surgeon had been accused of misconduct in an anonymous complaint and suspended pending review. The operating room was canceled.
Hannah closed her eyes.
Grant did not curse. He did not break a glass. He placed one calm call to Caroline.
Thirty minutes later, Caroline arrived with a laptop and a face sharpened by purpose.
"My father filed the complaint," she said. "But he used Helena's private email server to do it."
The attorney leaned forward. "Can you prove that?"
Caroline opened the laptop.
On the screen was a chain of messages between Martin and Helena.
The final line read: If she goes under, we take the boy before she wakes.
Hannah held Noah so tightly he complained.
Grant looked at the message and finally understood.
This was no longer only about the past.
It was a kidnapping being planned in polite language.
