CHAPTER 12: Surgery Behind Locked Doors

Hannah went into surgery two days later behind locked doors and three court orders.
Noah wanted to go with her until the last possible second. He pressed the blue ribbon into her palm and whispered, "You have to come back because Dad is still new."
Hannah laughed and cried at the same time.
Grant stood beside the bed, useless with fear.
"If anything happens," she began.
"No," he said, then caught himself. He had no right to forbid her fear. "Tell me what you need."
She looked at Noah, then at him. "Do not let him become a Whitmore trophy. Let him be messy. Let him be kind. Let him ask hard questions."
"I will."
"And do not make him choose between us."
Grant's voice roughened. "Never."
The surgery took six hours.
During the fourth hour, Helena arrived at the hospital with a priest and a family attorney, claiming she had a spiritual right to see her grandson. The security guard refused her. She called Grant from the lobby.
"You are being cruel," she said.
Grant stared at the operating room doors. "Cruelty is not being denied control."
"She turned you against me."
"No. You finally stood where I could see you."
He ended the call.
Noah slept on Caroline's lap in the waiting room, his head against the skirt of the woman who should have been on a honeymoon. Caroline stroked his hair awkwardly, as if gentleness was a language she was learning late.
When the surgeon came out, Grant could not stand.
"The tumor is benign," she said. "We removed it completely. There will be recovery, but she is stable."
Noah woke when Grant covered his face with both hands.
"Is Mom done sleeping?"
"Almost," Grant said.
They let Noah see her first.
Hannah was pale, surrounded by machines, but her fingers moved when Noah put the blue ribbon in her hand.
Grant stayed at the doorway until she opened her eyes.
For one second, she looked confused.
Then she saw him.
"You came back," she whispered.
Grant did not step closer until she nodded.
"I am still here," he said.
It was the first promise she believed enough to sleep through.
