CHAPTER 7: The Woman Waiting at the Gate
Hannah refused the guest suite.
She refused the estate car, the house doctor, and the lawyer who offered to manage her position as if motherhood were a brand crisis. Grant did not argue. He carried Noah to the iron gate where an old taxi waited under the estate lights.
Only then did Hannah stumble.
Grant caught her by instinct.
She stiffened immediately. "Don't."
He released her, though it cost him.
"You are sick," he said.
"I am tired."
"Hannah."
For a moment the years fell away. She had always hated when he said her name like a door he could open if he found the right key.
"There is a tumor," she said at last. "Benign, they think. Pressing where it should not. Surgery is scheduled in ten days, unless your mother finds a way to make my insurance disappear before then."
Grant felt the night tilt. "That is why you came now."
"I came because if something happens to me, Noah needed someone powerful enough to keep him from being erased."
"You thought I would protect him but not you?"
Hannah's smile was small and devastated. "I did not know if you would believe either of us."
Noah stirred in Grant's arms. "Mom?"
"I'm here," Hannah whispered.
Grant lowered his voice. "Let me pay for the surgery."
"No."
"Then let me call doctors."
"No."
"Then what can I do?"
She looked at the house behind him, bright with money and ruin. "Show up tomorrow. At the public clinic. Bring nothing expensive. Bring no cameras. Bring the photograph."
"What time?"
"Eight."
"I will be there."
"Do not promise for the man you want to be. Promise for the man you have been under pressure."
Grant absorbed it because he deserved it.
"I will be there at eight," he said. "Even if my family disowns me, the board removes me, and every newspaper in the country prints the worst version of tonight."
Hannah studied him in the gate light.
Then Noah lifted his sleepy head and touched Grant's bow tie. "Are you coming to pancakes?"
Grant nearly broke.
"If your mother allows it."
Hannah opened the taxi door.
"Eight first," she said. "Pancakes if you are still there at noon.
