CHAPTER 4: The Second Key

Daniel pulled Naomi through the kitchen and out the back door as the two men entered the house.

They ran across a narrow yard, climbed a wooden fence, and reached the alley where Daniel’s security vehicle was turning the corner. The strangers did not follow once they saw the guards.

At Hart Automotive, Priya placed the memory card in an isolated computer.

It contained one file.

A seven-year-old video showed Luis Ortega speaking into a workshop camera. Behind him stood Elias Hart and Owen Wynn.

“If anyone sees this,” Luis said, “the prototype has been compromised. The master engineering key was copied during the supplier update. Mr. Hart ordered the test canceled, but Victor Kane demanded one final run before investors arrived.”

Owen stepped into view. “I volunteered to move the car to storage. I was not scheduled to test at speed.”

The video ended abruptly.

Celeste watched from the doorway.

“My brother didn’t cause the crash,” she whispered.

“No,” Daniel said. “And my father didn’t send him onto the track.”

For years, both families had lived inside a lie shaped by Victor Kane.

Priya searched the memory card and found an encrypted archive. It required two passwords. Daniel guessed his father’s favorite phrase, but the first field rejected it.

Celeste stared at the model car. “Owen’s childhood nickname was Sparrow.”

The first lock opened.

The second asked for a date.

Naomi remembered the map in her anonymous envelope. One test facility had been circled beside the handwritten words: THE DAY HE TRIED TO TELL ME.

Celeste entered the date of Owen’s final voicemail to her.

The archive opened.

Inside were software logs proving that a remote command had disabled the prototype’s steering assistance seconds before the crash. The command came from a master key assigned to Victor Kane’s former engineering division.

There was also a financial ledger.

Victor had paid Luis to remain silent.

Celeste turned away in disgust. “Luis took money after Owen died?”

“Maybe that’s why he hid the evidence instead of destroying it,” Naomi said. “Guilt makes cowards do complicated things.”

Daniel found one newer entry in the ledger. Two weeks earlier, Victor had transferred money to an account linked to Celeste’s holding company.

Everyone looked at her.

Celeste wiped her eyes. “He told me it was an advance for exposing Hart Automotive. I planned to take the Vesper and force Daniel to reopen Owen’s case.”

“You also planned to sell design access,” Priya said.

Celeste did not deny it.

Then Daniel’s phone rang from an unknown number.

Luis’s frightened voice came through.

“Daniel, listen carefully. Victor has the current master key. He is inside your company.”

The workshop lights went out.

Across the bay, the Vesper’s headlights turned on by themselves.
