The Key He Refused to Give Her / Chapter 8 / 14 · 52 views

CHAPTER 8: The Command from Inside the Crowd

Celeste replayed Victor’s words until her face became still.

For years, she had believed revenge was loyalty to Owen. Victor had fed that belief, giving her selected documents, money, and a target. Now he spoke of her brother’s death as an investment.

“I want to testify,” she said.

Priya warned her that cooperation would not erase the forged transfer or stolen files.

“I know.”

Daniel studied her. “Why should we trust you?”

“You shouldn’t. Trust the recording.”

The next afternoon, the charity auction opened under heavier security than any guest realized. The black Vesper stood in the courtyard where the confrontation had begun. Its real control system was disconnected from the internet. A duplicate key lay beneath Daniel’s cuff.

Naomi began her independent livestream from beside the car.

She explained the ownership transfer, the second key, and the evidence surrounding Owen’s crash. She did not excuse Celeste. She did not protect Daniel from criticism either. She told viewers that he had staged a public confrontation rather than turning immediately to law enforcement.

The honesty surprised everyone.

Victor arrived wearing a dark suit and a calm smile. He walked through the front entrance as though he had nothing to fear.

“Daniel,” he said, extending a hand. “Terrible week.”

Daniel did not take it.

Celeste approached from behind the car. “You told me to bring you the key.”

Victor’s smile remained. “I told you to seek legal advice. You sound confused.”

Naomi lifted the microphone. “We have the recording.”

“Recordings can be fabricated.”

Victor looked toward the crowd, already preparing his version of events.

Then the Vesper’s lights flashed.

A remote command had reached the car despite the isolated system.

Daniel turned to the engineers. They shook their heads.

The car began rolling forward with no driver inside.

Guests screamed and scattered.

Daniel jumped through the open window, reached the manual kill switch beneath the steering column, and stopped the Vesper inches before it struck the stage.

Victor watched with an expression too satisfied to hide.

Naomi’s camera captured it.

Priya checked the network monitor. “The command came from inside the courtyard.”

Security began scanning guests.

Victor slowly stepped backward.

Celeste pointed at his gold watch. “That’s not your usual watch.”

A tiny transmitter light pulsed beneath its face.

Victor tore it from his wrist and threw it toward a fountain.

Before security could reach him, a delivery truck crashed through the side gate. The crowd scattered again.

The truck door opened.

Luis Ortega stumbled out with his hands tied.

And behind him stood one of the masked men from his house, holding a device connected to the Vesper’s control system.
