CHAPTER 7: Bring the Key to the Auction

The explosion shattered windows along the west side of Hart Automotive.

Daniel, Naomi, and Celeste emerged from the crawlspace covered in dust as firefighters rushed toward the basement. Daniel handed the second key to Priya, who sealed it inside an evidence pouch.

For the first time, Victor had failed to erase what he wanted.

But the victory lasted less than ten minutes.

Police received a call from Luis Ortega’s phone. Officers traced it to an abandoned warehouse and found blood on the floor, restraints, and Luis’s coat—but no Luis.

A message had been painted across the wall:

BRING THE KEY TO THE AUCTION.

The company’s charity auction was scheduled for the following evening. Canceling it would look like an admission that the Vesper was dangerous. Holding it could endanger hundreds of people.

Daniel wanted to shut it down.

Naomi disagreed. “Victor chose a public event because he needs an audience and access. That also makes it the best place to expose him.”

Celeste studied the message. “He wants the key, but he also wants the car. If the Vesper appears to fail in front of buyers, Hart collapses and Kane Automotive purchases the patents cheaply.”

Priya proposed a controlled trap. The real second key would remain with federal investigators. Daniel would carry a duplicate fitted with a tracker. The Vesper would be isolated from all external commands and operated only on a closed local system.

Naomi’s network refused to restore her credentials, but one independent livestream channel agreed to let her broadcast if she accepted full legal responsibility.

That night, she sat alone in an editing room, reviewing every clip. Daniel found her there.

“You could walk away,” he said. “No one would blame you.”

“My career is already being destroyed by someone else’s edit. I’d rather risk it on the full truth.”

He placed a cup of coffee beside her.

Naomi looked at him. “Why did you really put the key on the hood yesterday?”

Daniel leaned against the desk. “Celeste used to say the Vesper was proof I loved her. I wanted the cameras to see that ownership wasn’t affection.”

“And then you took it back.”

“I discovered the transfer before the event. I knew she would reach for it.”

“You set a trap.”

“Yes.”

Naomi did not approve, but she understood. Daniel had chosen public humiliation because he felt publicly deceived. Victor had then used that anger to divide them.

“Tomorrow,” she said, “no speeches written for revenge.”

Daniel nodded. “Only evidence.”

At midnight, Celeste entered with a small recorder.

“Victor called me,” she said. “He thinks I’m ready to return to him.”

On the recording, Victor gave precise instructions for stealing the key during the auction.

Then he added one final promise.

Once Hart is finished, your brother’s death will finally be worth something.
