CHAPTER 12: Jonah Steps Back Into the Light

The young man returned at the edge of sunset.
He stood beneath the string lights with the foil package still in one hand, unfinished. Someone had given him water. Someone else had offered a clean towel. The market, embarrassed by its first judgment, was trying quietly to become better.
Celia saw him and went still.
Jonah looked smaller than the scandal built around him, but not weak. Dirt did not erase posture. Hunger did not erase blood. He walked toward the office stairs as if every step had been counted before he arrived.
'Aunt Celia,' he said.
Her voice softened for the crowd. 'Jonah, sweetheart, you need help.'
'I needed the key,' he said. 'And I needed to know who would feed someone when you told them not to.'
Daniel felt every vendor turn toward him then, not with applause, but with understanding heavy enough to hold.
