Silas Whitmore had amended the market trust six months earlier. If Jonah returned with the original key and two unaffiliated witnesses confirmed he was denied or mistreated by management, Celia's temporary control would suspend pending investigation.
Vanessa looked at Daniel then with hatred too tired to hide.
Daniel understood why Jonah had come dirty, hungry, and alone. He had not been testing kindness for sentiment. He had been collecting the one proof Celia could not forge: what powerful people did when they thought a person had no value.
'I did not deny him,' Vanessa said quickly.
A woman from the bakery stepped forward. 'You called security before he reached a counter.'
The fishmonger added, 'You told us not to serve him.'
Daniel placed the foil-wrapped meal on the desk beside the ledger.
No one laughed at the evidence.
