CHAPTER 15: A Table at the First Stall

By nightfall, the market lights looked different.
Security escorted Vanessa away from the north office. Celia left through the service gate without the cameras she usually invited. Vendors stood in clusters under the tents, speaking softly as investigators sealed cabinets and photographed ledgers.
Jonah remained beside Booth 14, wrapped in Daniel's spare jacket, eating the food slowly now because no one was trying to take it from him.
'Why come to me?' Daniel asked.
Jonah shook his head. 'I did not know it would be you.'
'Then why this stall?'
He looked toward the old photograph upstairs. 'My grandfather said the first honest kitchen always survives closest to the smoke.'
Daniel laughed once, not because it was funny, but because exhaustion sometimes needed a door.
Above them, workers changed the lock on the office that had held the market's secrets too long.
The next morning, North Pier opened late.
A handwritten sign appeared at the entrance: Market under review. Vendors protected. No one hungry turned away from Booth 14 today.
Daniel did not write the last line. Jonah did.
He came back washed, shaved, and still too thin, wearing borrowed clothes that fit badly but standing straighter than the men who had tried to bury him under rumors. Reporters waited near the gate. Lawyers occupied the office. Celia's name disappeared from every temporary authority notice before noon.
Jonah avoided the cameras and walked to Daniel's counter first.
He placed the silver key on the steel surface between them, no longer as a warning, but as a promise.
'My grandfather built this place so no cook had to beg powerful people for permission to feed someone,' he said.
Daniel looked out at the market, at smoke rising into clean daylight.
This time, everyone saw the hungry man before they saw the heir.
