CHAPTER 3: The Mother Who Refused the Second Pew

A church usher approached with an anxious expression, hoping to solve a scandal by moving furniture.
'Mrs. Vale,' he whispered, 'there is space just behind if you would be more comfortable.'
Eleanor lifted her eyes to him. He stepped back immediately, ashamed without knowing why.
For thirty-eight years she had sat beside Adrian through fevers, board dinners, school concerts, and the terrible winter after his father died. She had watched him turn his inheritance into a company that kept half the county employed. She had corrected his speeches, buried his mistakes, and received every midnight call no one else had earned.
She would not move from the front pew at his funeral because a smiling girl wanted a better angle.
Julian's mouth tightened. Celeste's smile remained, but something behind it flickered.
The minister cleared his throat from the pulpit. Reverend Alden had served the Vale family long enough to recognize danger when it sat down in expensive clothes.
'We will continue,' he said, but his eyes moved not to Julian, not to Celeste, but to the sealed envelope resting beside his Bible.
