CHAPTER 4: A Whisper Sharp Enough for Stone

Celeste did not stop after the first whisper because people like her often mistook restraint for fear.
She folded her hands, bowed her head, and leaned close again while the reverend spoke about mercy. To the rest of the chapel she looked reverent. To Eleanor, she sounded delighted.
'Adrian was tired of your control,' Celeste breathed. 'Julian understands the future. I hope you packed gently. Big houses feel cruel when they stop needing old women.'
Eleanor looked straight ahead at the coffin. Beneath the white flowers, Adrian's name plate caught the pale church light.
She wanted, for one human second, to turn and answer with every truth she knew: that Celeste had visited Adrian's study after midnight, that Julian had begged for emergency signatures while his brother slept upstairs, that both of them had treated illness like a doorway.
But Eleanor had spent a lifetime learning when silence protected more than pride.
She only said, 'Not in front of my son.'
Celeste smiled. 'Your son is not in front of anyone anymore.'
That sentence reached the old minister. His hand stopped on the page.
