CHAPTER 9: The Folder Beneath the Lilies
Inside the folder were copies, not originals. Adrian had always respected evidence too much to bring the only version of anything to a funeral.
Eleanor saw bank notices, medical logs, security stills, and a final codicil to his will. A small photograph slipped halfway free. It showed Julian outside Vale House at two in the morning, Celeste beside him, both looking back toward a lit upstairs window.
At the bottom of the first page was a sentence in Adrian's hand.
Mother, do not let them turn mourning into ownership.
Eleanor touched the words once. Then she passed the page to the attorney.
Reverend Alden read the legal summary because Adrian had instructed him to keep everything in the light.
Vale House would not transfer to Julian. The board vote was suspended. Celeste had no claim through any consulting agreement, private promise, or alleged engagement arrangement. Eleanor Vale was named temporary trustee of the family estate until independent review concluded.
Celeste made a small sound. Julian grabbed the pew in front of him.
The white lilies on the coffin trembled from nothing anyone could see.
