CHAPTER 3: Every Window Had Heard Her Silence

Emma had been silent in that penthouse for two years.
Silent when Grant forgot anniversaries because investors were in town. Silent when his mother corrected Emma’s clothes in front of guests. Silent when Sloane’s name appeared too often in calendar invites that should have ended at business hours.
Silence had once felt like dignity.
Then it became furniture.
Grant learned to walk around it. Sloane learned to sit on it. Everyone in their orbit learned to mistake Emma’s restraint for permission.
What none of them understood was that Emma had not been born quiet.
She had been raised in rooms where people lowered their voices when her father entered. She had seen contracts destroy louder men than Grant before breakfast. She had watched one signature move towers, banks, and boardrooms.
But she had married for love, not leverage.
That was why Grant never saw the danger.
He thought she had given up power when she took his name.
Emma finally wrapped her fingers around the phone.
There were photographs in the hallway of Emma and Grant on their wedding day. In every frame, Grant faced the camera like a man accepting an award. Emma faced him like a woman making a promise.
She had not known then that promises could become hiding places for men who did not deserve them.
