CHAPTER 9: The Mirror Behind the City

The room became a mirror, and Grant finally saw himself in it.
Not the founder from magazine covers. Not the husband with the perfect apartment and the perfect smile. Not the man Sloane had admired from across gala tables.
Just a frightened man in an expensive suit, standing over the woman whose name had carried him farther than his talent ever could.
The attorneys spoke about emergency board review, suspended credit, the removal of discretionary authority, and evidence preservation inside the building.
Security stood quietly near the doors.
Sloane moved toward the hallway, but no one rushed to stop her. Consequences did not always need handcuffs. Sometimes they only needed witnesses.
Grant turned back to Emma.
“You would destroy me over one mistake?”
Emma’s laugh was small and almost sad.
“No,” she said. “One mistake is when you forget what someone gave you.”
She looked at the marble beneath them.
“This was what you did when you thought I had nothing left to give.”
Grant had built speeches for crises like this. He had statements for market corrections, delayed permits, hostile questions, and investor doubt. None of them fit a wife standing in front of him with her father on the phone and her own name returning to her like a key.
For once, performance had no useful costume.
