CHAPTER 15: The Woman Who Landed With the Truth

Claire walked off the jet first.
She did not hurry. She did not look back for Ryan's permission, Brooke's apology, or the board's approval. The stairs were wet, and the night air smelled of fuel and rain, but after the sealed cabin, even bad weather felt honest.
Cecilia stood beneath a black umbrella at the bottom of the stairs, smaller than Claire remembered and twice as formidable.
"You did well," the older woman said.
Claire looked at the terminal windows. Inside, people were already gathering around a conference table where Ryan's name would be discussed without his control over the sentence.
"I should have done it sooner," Claire said.
Cecilia's eyes softened only slightly. "Most women do. Then one day they do it at exactly the right altitude."
Behind them, Ryan appeared in the doorway of the jet, smaller against the light than he had looked at takeoff.
Claire did not turn.
At thirty thousand feet, she had found his secret. On the ground, she finally kept her own name.
