CHAPTER 14: What the Dead Left Unfinished
The second flash drive did not accuse Vivian of killing Aaron.
Aaron had been careful, even in fear. He recorded what he knew, not what grief might want to imagine. Unauthorized transfers. Forged board minutes. A draft statement blaming Maya for financial misconduct. Emails between Vivian and Lucas discussing how quickly a widow could be removed if she had no children and no local family.
That was enough.
Enough for detectives to collect devices. Enough for Bennett to request an expanded injunction. Enough for Lucas to sit at the kitchen table with his head in his hands while Vivian finally stopped performing outrage.
Maya opened Aaron's letter in the den while rain blurred the window behind his chair.
Maya, it began, I am sorry I made you carry proof instead of peace.
She covered her mouth and read on.
He wrote that he had waited too long to confront them because family had trained him to confuse loyalty with repair. He wrote that he loved her more than the house, more than the company, more than any Graydon name carved into stone.
The last sentence was simple.
If they make you stand in the rain, make them answer under the light.
