CHAPTER 15: No One Throws Out the Rain

Vivian did not leave in handcuffs that night. Rich family crimes often began with softer verbs: questioned, reviewed, escorted, advised. But the softness fooled no one in the house.
The detective asked her to come to the station for a formal statement. Officer Lane bagged the broken photograph. Reyes stood by the front door Vivian had tried to turn into a border.
Before Vivian stepped outside, she looked back at the foyer, the staircase, the den, the careful house she had already begun rearranging in her mind. 'Aaron would not want this,' she said.
Maya held up the sealed copy of his statement. 'Aaron already spoke.'
Vivian's smile vanished completely.
Near dawn, Maya returned to the driveway alone. The rain had weakened to mist. The suitcase remained open on the pavement, half empty now, its lining lifted like a secret finally breathing.
Maya gathered what could be saved. The blue sweater smelled like rain instead of Aaron. The photograph frame was ruined, but the picture inside had survived.
She looked toward the house. The porch light still burned. Vivian had left it on, maybe by accident, maybe because she believed the house still owed her obedience.
Maya went inside and turned it off herself.
Then she stood in the doorway while morning lifted gray over the wet street.
Aaron was gone. No document could undo that. No hearing or exposed lie could return his hand to hers.
But his last act had brought her back over the threshold.
No one would throw her out of the life he had died protecting.
